Gabion Basket Wall Rehabilitation at Wye

Dirt Rock Civil was engaged to deliver the rehabilitation of existing gabion retaining structures along a section of the Great Ocean Road. Works involved the careful dismantling, realignment, and reconstruction of multi-tiered gabion walls to stabilise the coastal embankment and improve long-term slope integrity.

The project required detailed sequencing in multiple stages, including removal and reuse of existing rock, installation of new geotextile lining, reinstatement of drainage infrastructure, and construction of new gabion wall sections to specified setback angles.

Associated works included:

  • Site establishment and traffic management along a live coastal road

  • Service locating and environmental management

  • Excavation, dewatering, and ground stabilisation

  • Vegetation trimming, topsoiling, and site reinstatement upon completion

This project demanded precise coordination and environmental control to safely deliver works within a highly constrained coastal environment while maintaining access and protecting the surrounding natural assets
